Mars
The symbol for Mars represents the shield and the spear, in other words, the defensive and offensive nature of this planet.
But more of that later.
The planet Mars orbits the Sun between the Earth and Jupiter - it's orbit taking approximately 2 years, spending around 2 months in each sign.
In mythological terms, manifesting a masculine energy - Mars to the ancient Greeks was associated with Ares, the god of war, who was generally disliked by gods and mortals alike for his impulsive temperament.
However, the Roman Mars was also known as the god of war, an heroic god, and was revered and worshiped by their legions.
He was named for Mars/March a time when battles recommenced after the winter months.
In the natal chart, Mars gives rise to the following questions.
What motivates me? What excites and sparks me? What do I desire and how do I battle?
The energy of Mars is both protective and defensive as mentioned early.
Let's look at the protective role first.
Mars has a vested interest in our charts in helping us to assert ourselves, helping us to achieve and to satisfy our needs, to win the race, o put ourselves first.
The action of Mars is separative, typically Mars goes it alone and should not feel the need to ask permission, to follow the wishes of others
Mars forges ahead and has a healthy relationship with the word 'self'! i.e. Self motivated, self aware, self assertive
Here we define our boundaries, mark our territory, hold our own and foster the ability to say 'No'
If we look at the sign position of Mars in our charts it can indicate how we use that energy and what we direct the energy into....
Aries, winning; Taurus, growth; Gemini, connecting; Cancer, providing; Leo, self belief; Virgo, work; Libra, relationships; Scorpio, achieving objectives; Sagittarius, physical and mental activity; Capricorn, ambition; Aquarius, the truth; Pisces, connecting.
Bearing in mind that fiery and warlike feel of Mars, this planet can also activate a defensive role. We tend to initiate this role when we feel unable to fulfill our needs, unable to protect ourselves or unable to meet our goals.
At such times Mars could become either inflamed and frustrated, angry and touchy.
If Mars energy becomes frustrated it can turn inwards leading to feelings of impotence, depression or we may manifest signs of psychosomatic ailments.
It goes without saying that we need to find healthy and creative outlets for this potent energy source - perhaps by defining our goals, adopting a pioneering spirit, or perhaps engaging in physical sports and activities.
Mars loves a winner!
